Bank Teller

If you are interested in a career in the financial industry, but are not sure if you want to be burdened with schooling, then a bank teller might be the perfect job for you! With many financial institutions established across the country, there is always an open position waiting for the right individual to step in and fill it.

Usually being the first person a client sees, the bank teller is an integral part of the banking industry. The primary function of the teller is to process financial transactions for clients. These transactions include, but are not limited to: cashing checks, depositing and/or withdrawing money, cash advances, loan payments and merchant transactions. When processing any transaction, the teller must be able to verify that the document is a true and legal document, endorsement of the document, the date, amount, customer's signature and that the customer provides valid identification. Maintaining a balanced cash drawer is also essential to a bank teller's job. Banking customers may have questions regarding either the bank itself or the services it provides, therefore keeping knowledgeable about policies and products is required.

Getting started in a career as a bank teller is not too difficult. Most financial institutions require only a high school diploma. However, most banks also desire to have someone who has had previous cash handling experience and someone who has superb mathematical skills. Training is usually done on the job. Because of the many different types of transactions, a bank teller is required to be detail oriented and organized. Strong interpersonal skills are also mandatory, as it is the duty of the bank teller to establish lasting relationships with banking clients.

A bank teller can expect to make between $9.50 an hour to about $12.00 an hour, which equates to around $20,000 to $25,000 annually. If you are a dedicated individual who is looking to go into the financial field without a degree, a career as a bank teller just may be the route to take. Even in an unstable economy, people are always going to need a place to conduct their financial needs.
