Socializing Outside of Work

Socializing outside of the office can improve your career. Fraternizing with fellow employees in a relaxed environment allows you to build more personal relationships. However, there are some dos and don’ts one must follow when having cocktails with coworkers or playing golf with the boss.

Do discuss topics other than work. Ask someone about their hobbies and their family.

Don’t discuss topics that could be offensive. Don’t rant on touchy subjects such as politics and religion. Alienating fellow employees does not make for a comfortable work environment.

Do go to the company happy hour. Having a couple cocktails with co-workers is a great way to socialize and unwind.

Don’t get drunk! Getting loaded around your coworkers is the quickest way to ruin your reputation and show that you’re irresponsible. You may not even drink that often, but one instance is all it takes.

Keep these suggestions in mind the next time you’re invited out. You’ll be surprised by how much friendlier your corporate environment will seem when you get to know your fellow coworkers a bit better.
