What is an Aptitude Test and why should they matter to you?

Aptitude testing evaluates how an individual reacts to situations and accomplishes tasks in his or her daily life. An aptitude test typically includes questions about the individual's hobbies, talents, interests and overall personality. Companies, employment agencies and schools use aptitude tests to offer guidance to the test taker regarding his or her professional or academic path.

Aptitude tests are utilized for numerous reasons and can be administered by a wide variety of sources. Some aptitude tests are designed to measure a person's capacity in a specific area, such as mechanical, spatial, sensory, clerical, numerical, verbal, logic and reason. The majority of aptitude tests are used by learning institutions or employers; however, certain government bodies utilize such tests as well, depending on the position an individual is seeking.

Occupational Purposes

Employers often use such tests to determine which job candidate is most suitable for a position or promotion. A career aptitude test, sometimes called a career assessment test, is considered one of the most useful of all the career development tools available in today's business world. A career aptitude test is typically given at some point during the interview process; however, an employer may also choose to utilize a career assessment test when determining which employee is best suited for an upcoming promotion or to decide whether a person should be given more responsibility in his or her current position.

Most career aptitude tests are designed to measure an individual's skills in a particular field. For assessment and staffing purposes, employers utilize tests such as the Predictive Index--PI--the Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Test, Situational Judgment Test, and the Personality and Preference Inventory Test. Many times, the use of such tests in conjunction with a personal interview are all the employer uses in order to make a decision concerning the selection of a new employee. Cheating on an aptitude test is difficult and, therefore, they are considered reliable by most interviewers.

Educational Purposes

Aptitude tests designed for educational purposes include the Scholastic Assessment Test--SAT--and the American College Testing Exam--ACT. These aptitude tests are created to gauge one's overall academic competency. Such tests are also used at various times during a child's life in order to determine if he or she is in the appropriate grade in school or if adjustments need to be made. Additionally, achievement tests are frequently used by educators to measure a student's performance and comprehension in a variety of subjects.

Personality Tests

Personality inventories, such as the Myers-Briggs Personality Test, ask questions about a person's interests and personal values to determine which academic field or career best fits his or her personality. Such tests are also used by companies for the purpose of career development. In addition, these tests are often administered along with other aptitude tests to those seeking entrance to medical school, as an individual's personality and how he or she reacts to stress is highly important with regard to this field.

The Creation of Aptitude Tests

Aptitude and achievement tests are typically designed by educators or outside sources such as the Department of Education. They generally have no formal guidelines; however, the same format and structure are usually followed regardless of the source of the test. Computers are often used by test-makers to help them achieve the best results when creating aptitude and assessment tests.

While no test is an infallible gauge of one's ability, standardized aptitude tests provide students, school admission boards, and potential employers a basic idea of where an individual's weaknesses and strengths lie, as well as where they rank among their peers. It is for this reason such tests are a beneficial tool in the business and academic worlds.
