With the rapidly changing environment of business technology, the age-old question of what to do after graduating from college takes on new meaning. One of the most promising careers now and in the coming decade is computer science, or information technology (ITT). Job opportunities are expected to grow rapidly, and the field attracts employees from a variety of different backgrounds.For prospective entrants into the career, some computer knowledge is necessary. There is usually room for conscientious and talented workers to advance to higher levels.According to the Occupational Handbook, jobs fall into several broad categories:• Network engineers or network architects – design computer networks, install them, test, and analyze them• Computer and Network systems administrators – create and set up computer systems for organizations, working in various types of spaces and conditions• Database administrators – work with databases to figure out ways to organize, store, analyze, and use data belonging to the organization• Computer security specialists – set up and provide maintenance for the security of information technology - such protection against as cyber attacks• Telecommunication specialists – coordinate communication systems relating to computers, videos, and related devices• Web administrators or web masters – maintain web sites and collect information to make them user-friendly and responsive to needs of organizations and users• Web developers – handle the technical features of web sites and create pages that attract desired targetsIndividuals in these positions generally work in fairly comfortable offices, and most adhere to a normal 40-hour week. However, a few work longer hours or in less comfortable environments. As computer systems become more sophisticated and more easily maintained, many of these jobs may be done from remote work sites – making this a good option for virtual employees and opening doors to employees who live in remote areas. ITT workers are usually well-paid, but averages are difficult to calculate because of the wide range of specialties and levels within the field. In 2008, median salary for computer support specialists was around $44,000 while the pay for computer engineers or scientists averaged around $85,000.Careers in computer science cover a wide range, and the employment outlook is promising. Employees can advance on the job, but deciding on initial education and entry level may be difficult. Aptitude tests and career assessments are a good place to start the search. In this quickly changing career field, employees are generally rewarded for continuing their education – either at work or in the classroom.
