Cosmetologist

Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. It is likely that you will take many an aptitude test or career assessment before you have an idea of what you want to do. You will spend a large portion of the rest of your life involved in the career you choose, so you need to make sure that it is something you won't get tired of easily. Cosmetology can be an exciting career if you are well-suited for it, but it is also challenging at times.

Several different occupations make up the broad field of cosmetology including careers as a nail technician, barber, shampooer, hairstylist, skin care specialist, and hairdresser. A typical day for a cosmetologist will be different based on his or her specialty. For example, a hairstylist will spend the day washing, cutting, and styling hair for various clients while a nail technician will spend most of his or her time applying nail polish, airbrushing, or filling acrylic nails sets.

In order to become a cosmetologist, one must be at least 16 years of age and complete an accredited course in the appropriate specialty. Most cosmetology courses last about nine months, though some programs may be shorter or longer. Some states also require that the individual have a high school diploma or GED. All cosmetology workers must be licensed with the exception of shampooers. Becoming licensed typically consists of completing an appropriate training program and passing a state licensing exam specific to the desired specialty.

As a cosmetologist advances in his or her career, he or she will gain more experience and may even acquire regular customers. Some cosmetologists may even open his or her own salon, become a sales representative, or an image consultant. Finally, some cosmetologists may move on to teach classes in cosmetology training programs.

The need for cosmetologists entering the workforce in the near future is expected to increase, so most people who attend cosmetology school will easily find a job upon graduation. Cosmetologists typically earn a salary of around $23,000 each year, but the amount earned can vary based on location and specialty. This averages to a little over $11 per hour of work.

A career in cosmetology can be perfect for some , but it is definitely not the highest paying job available. However, the education process is simpler and quicker than that of many other professions. The most important thing to ask yourself before choosing any career is "Will I still want to do this after ten years?" If the answer is "yes," then you are on the right track
