One of the most common career choices for someone with a higher level of education is to become a lawyer. Becoming a lawyer will almost always require a person to successfully complete a three-year law school curriculum and pass a state’s examination giving them the right to practice law in that state. While all lawyers have to meet the same general qualifications to start their career, there are many different legal career paths that a lawyer could take which would drastically alter what it will be like for them to work in that profession.
Where do lawyers usually work?
Many lawyers end up working for large corporate law firms or for internal counsel for a large company. Lawyers who choose this route of the profession will typically spend much of their time reviewing current law, negotiating contracts, and potentially preparing court cases. Most lawyers in this field will have to be able to work in a fast paced environment and be able to work on multiple cases at once.
Other lawyers choose to go into either criminal prosecution or defense. These lawyers, which are similar to the ones seen in court rooms on TV, be involved in either defending or prosecuting defendants in a criminal or civil case. This job will require plenty of time researching the case, interviewing witnesses, selecting a jury, and negotiating with the other side in an attempt to get a plea bargain or settle out of court. These lawyers could either work for the government or private firms.
