Housekeepers are an integral part of hotels, doctor's offices, hospitals, spas, and private cleaning service companies. In fact, some housekeepers earn great income by having their own housekeeping business, providing services to local friends, family, and members of the community.

Becoming a housekeeper does not require taking an aptitude test or career assessment test, like many other jobs and careers do. Typically, one would apply at a company or business that offers housekeeping services, go through the interview process, and get hired to work.

A housekeeper's job duties are varied and include any number of services. Some housekeepers exclusively provide laundry services. Others clean bathrooms, bedrooms, dust, vacuum, wash linens, and remove trash from trash bins. A housekeeper is often paid a generous tip, as is often the case for housekeepers working at hotels and spas.

The exciting part about being a housekeeper is being able to take a sense of pride in organizing and cleaning a cluttered, dirty space and making it clean, refreshed, and sparkling. Housekeepers are also typically left unsupervised. This can be a great opportunity for those that don't like to work in a stuffy office setting, and enjoy performing various services without much supervision.

Housekeepers also get a great workout from the cleaning and scrubbing services they perform. In a typical part-time or full-time shift, a housekeeper can be bending, scrubbing, scooping, and lifting. This results in hundreds of calories being burned over the course of any shift. Many housekeepers are in peak physical condition.

Housekeepers earn a competitive hourly wage. Some housekeepers in spas and those that work for private clients, full-time, or in live-in types of situations can be provided a base salary, plus tips, bonuses, commissions, and even free room and board, food, and necessary supplies.

Anyone interested in becoming a housekeeper should check their local newspaper for classified job ads looking to hire housekeepers. Online job boards, bulletin boards at college campuses and grocery stores are other great resources to find employment as a housekeeper. One should also apply to any local hospitals, clinics, spas, hotels, and motels, as these companies frequently hire housekeepers upon submission of an application.
