Whether you are announcing news, weather or sports, a broadcaster’s day typically revolves around research and preparation for the next report. Generally speaking, you must collect and organize material so that you are knowledgeable about the particular subject and can articulately convey the necessary information to your audience. Ideally, your audience should feel enlightened and satisfied after your delivery of the specific facts. Broadcast preparation can vary greatly depending on the material you plan to report. Prep may consist of travel (local or international), reading and taking notes, interviewing individuals relevant to the story, or going over weather patterns. Many broadcasters keep a compilation of material year-round to better track current events and to ensure they understand any breaking news at a moment’s notice. A broadcaster must also meet with the production team to guarantee that all crew members are in sync and know what to expect for the upcoming report. Broadcasters generally follow a daily schedule, and once the report is completed, prep work for the next day begins. Broadcasting can be a very fast-paced and unpredictable environment, and you must be primed to improvise under unforeseen circumstances.
There are also broadcasting positions available behind the scenes, in this segment of the industry, your day to day job is ensuring everything runs smoothly. Careers include: producer, director and technician.
