Day in the life of a computer animator

Arts, graphich design, computers, animation, communications, entertainment

What is a typical day like for a computer animator?
Fortunately, there is no "typical" day for computer animators. For people who have finished their computer animation training and gone on to a publishing house, it will be a desk job, but with some extra perks aimed at making creative people more comfortable. It will be very similar to any corporate artist job – you will be expected to meet deadlines given by supervisory committees, but you will also be allowed to set your work times and peak hours. You will be expected to bring creative ideas to the table when there are scheduling snags or revisions.

Another alternative when you finish your computer animation classes, would be to work as a freelance artist. This allows you to be more flexible with your hours, your creative vision and your payment schedule.

After I complete my computer animation degree, how do I start?

There are difficult aspects of trying to find work in a highly competitive field. One is the fact that you may have to work as an intern or even as a lower-level office worker for a company you wish to be hired at first. Then it's just a matter of waiting for the right opportunity to come along to demonstrate the knowledge you acquired during your computer animation training.

As many people who hold a computer animation degree will tell you, no matter how grand your qualifications, high-profile employers will only take you on if you've proved you can contribute to a team environment. They also appreciate animators who delegate responsibilities to themselves when no one else wants them. Once that's established, employers will really allow you to show what you've learned from your computer animation classes and help you develop your talent. All of this will be part of the sacrifice you make to earn a living doing something you love. It's a hard field to enter, but the creative fulfillment can more than make up for it later.
