Day in the life of a gunsmith

Gunsmiths have the option of working in a variety of locations as specialists or as general practitioners.  Gunsmiths responsibilities are to ensure that firearms function correctly.  They must also use gun safety handling procedures to guide inspections and prevent weaponry failure.  Some may focus their gunsmith careers in one particular area, such as:

  • Customizing guns for customers from raw materials
  • Finishing firearms by applying various chemicals 
  • Manufacturing various gun parts

To practice as a gunsmith, you must obtain a Federal Firearms License from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.  This involves a thorough background investigations and an inspection of the work premises.
