A Day in the life of a small engine mechanic

mechanic, small engine, trades, business, customer service

What is the work environment of a small engine mechanic like?

Generally, small engine mechanics spend time working in indoor repair shops that are climate controlled, well lit and ventilated. Marine mechanics are usually prone to performing more work outdoors, but most marine shops have covered workspaces.

During winter months, work can often decrease from 40 hours per week because customers’ use of lawnmowers, power tools and motorcycles will decrease. This would also be true for many parts of a marine mechanic's work. During peak summer months, all across the country a busy work week can easily exceed 40 hours.

What is working in small engine repair like?

In small engine repair, mechanics service equipment ranging from jet skis, to chainsaws, to motorcycles. Frequently, small engine mechanics specialize in a specific service and repair of one area such as motorcycles or motorboats. In a regular case, a small engine mechanic diagnoses mechanical, fuel and electrical problems with a device, then sets a repair schedule.

Duties as a small engine and motorcycle mechanic include:

  • Inspect and test engines for safety
  • Adjust, repair and replace engine parts
  • Identify electrical and mechanical problems with diagnostic equipment
  • Test performance of equipment
  • Estimate parts and repair costs
  • Advise customers

What is the national salary average for small engine mechanics?

In 2008, the national earning average for small engine mechanics, marine mechanics and motorcycle mechanics fell between $13.00 and $17.50 an hour. Most small engine mechanics work at motor vehicle dealers, retail hardware stores or independent repair shops, which set hourly work schedules rather than yearly salaries.
