It may sound cliché, but there really is no “typical day” for a professional electrician. There are typical jobs, such as wiring up new homes and apartments, repairing short circuits in the electrical systems of homes and properties, but the work environment can change just as easily as the job site.
Many electricians are construction contractors who work wherever the job takes them for employers such as real estate corporations and property management firms. One of the largest employers for professional electricians that have recently emerged is the cable industry. Cable companies are now the single largest employer of electricians in the country. Duties for cable company work means wiring up new houses for service, working on utility poles and switchboxes and repairing existing customers equipment. Since cable is a technical competition between media companies, there is a constant flow of new technology that needs to be upgraded or installed by qualified technicians.
