Preparing for a career as an aviation technician requires specialized training. New technicians are rarely trained on the job, so formal training programs are the best way to prepare. About 170 schools in the United States have been certified by the FAA. These schools offer 2- and 4-year degrees in avionics, aviation technology or aviation maintenance management.
Subjects and courses that are helpful preparation for these programs include:
- Mathematics
- Physics
- Chemistry
- Electronics
- Computer science
- Mechanical drawing
While attending a formal training program, students experience courses that are more specialized to aviation technicians’ specific job duties. These courses allow students to use the tools and equipment the professionals use. In addition to formal training programs, the United States armed forces provide helpful experience for aviation technicians.
