Education experience of a construction worker

building, construction, job sites, labor

With all the specialized tasks and hands-on work that is required of construction workers, many individuals build real-world experience through apprenticeships and time spent on-the-job. This can be your chance to see first-hand what it really means to work in construction.

For those who want to get a head-start on their construction careers, some high schools offer vocational and technical classes that introduce many construction fundamentals. From working with basic power tools to mastering building techniques, these classes can be a great introduction to this craft. Classes that cover subjects like English, mathematics, physics, mechanical drawing, blueprint reading, welding and general shop can be helpful as well.

Some construction laborers may choose more formal training through apprenticeships. These programs typically last between two and four years, and they combine classroom instruction with hands-on, practical experience. Basic construction skills, the correct use of tools and equipment and safety procedures are all topics that can be covered in apprenticeship programs.
