Preparation for a career in HVAC maintenance is essential. The skills used on-the-job are advanced and unique. And as the systems themselves become more advanced, companies that employ HVAC technicians will prefer to hire individuals who are already experienced, or who have attended a formal training program in HVAC work. There are several educational and training options for candidates interested in the HVAC field that will help them learn the basics of installation, maintenance and repair. These include:
- High school courses
- Junior and community college programs
- Trade schools
- United States Armed Forces
- Apprenticeship programs
Most of these training programs last between six months and two years. However, many apprenticeship programs that employ a combination of classroom and practical experience last between three and five years.
