Education experience of a medical assistant

To prepare for a rewarding career in medical assisting, students have many educational options in front of them. High school and postsecondary vocational-technical programs both offer medical assisting programs. These usually last one year and award a diploma or certificate. Junior and community college programs in medical assisting will offer an associate degree upon completing the program. Typical coursework involves the following areas:

• Anatomy and physiology
• Medical terminology
• Typing, transcription, record keeping and accounting
• Clinical and diagnostic procedures
• First aid
• Medical ethics and law

Naturally, those in the medical field learn much of what they know through real-world experience. Employers value candidates who have experience in the medical field. A good way to get a medical assisting foot in the door is to inquire into local volunteer opportunities. Also, certification from medical assisting certification programs can pay off during the job search. Many employers prefer candidates with experience or certification in medical assisting. The American Association of Medical Assistants and American Medical Technologists are two associations that assist students in attaining this certification.
