Education experience of a medical transcriptionist

medical records, administration and clerical, nurse, hospital, doctors,

Many employers prefer to hire transcriptionists who have completed postsecondary training in medical transcription. Strong writing and computer skills are also a must for medical transcriptionists. Institutions such as vocational schools, community colleges and distance-learning programs offer training in medical transcription. Depending on the school you choose, you may be able to complete a two-year associate degree program or a one-year certificate program.

Within many of these programs, you’ll complete coursework in subjects such as:

  • Anatomy
  • Medical terminology
  • Legal issues relating to the healthcare field
  • English grammar and punctuation

Many of these programs also include an externship or on-the-job experience portion. You’ll get to experience a true day in the life of a medical transcriptionist and build the real-world skills you’ll use in your own career.
