Most often, prospective teachers prepare for their career by attaining a bachelor’s degree from a four-year university and an additional teaching license. However, preschool or vocational education teachers may not need a degree. Instead, adequate experience in the field will help them find a job.
Traditional education training programs allow teachers to learn the most effective teaching techniques. Teachers will also need a well-rounded knowledge base to help their students learn about a range of topics. This requires taking courses in:
• Mathematics
• Physical science
• Social science
• Music
• Art
• Literature
Teachers also learn about specific education techniques in classes related to education philosophy, the psychology of learning and teaching methods. These classes give teachers the expertise to discover the teaching style that is best suited to their students. Before taking charge of their own classrooms, teachers complete a student-teaching internship where they work alongside a more experienced teacher. Also, all public schools in the United States require teachers to gain their license before they begin work. Each State board of education grants licenses to teachers after they pass a basic competency test.
