Civil Service

The United States Government is the largest employer in America. Even with the current economic down turn, the United States government employs more people than any other company. From the Federal Government in Washington D.C to the local municipality where you reside, there are many employment possibilities and career choices available for those interested in Civil Service Career Opportunities.

What is a Civil Service Job?
A civil service job is any salaried employment that is performed for a state or federal government agency.
Any person engaged in work for which they are paid by a government agency has a civil service job. Postal workers, DMV employees, policemen and firemen are some examples of civil service jobs. Census workers are civil service employees. The President of the United States is a civil service employee.

The number of government employees and the variety of duties they perform has steadily increased over the last thirty years. With a tradition of job security, generous pension plans, competitive salary, consistent work schedules and excellent health benefits, any government job has traditionally been highly coveted. Regardless of some negative public opinion that often depicts civil service employees as inept, rude and unpleasant, government workers are envied for earning more during their career, in wages and benefits than their private sector counterparts.

Who can qualify for a civil service job?
Anyone who is able to perform the duties outlined in the job description can apply for a civil service job. The list of government jobs can include any occupation imaginable. From clerical workers and technical computer staff, to street sweepers and aircraft mechanics, there are any number of employment opportunities with the government. Your own individual career assessment will dictate what opportunity you might pursue for a civil service career.

Not everyone qualifies to be a government employee. To qualify to work for the government, civil service jobs require an application process that involves the completion of an aptitude test and an extensive background check that includes fingerprinting.
