If you are engaged and interested in the state of your local community, you might want to consider emplyment as a county worker. County workers fill a variety of positions in their respective towns, including park and recreation management, clerical work, managing elections, and public service.

Positions
Teenagers have been able to find employment in their local communities by becoming county workers in their parks, pools, and natural forests and areas. These positions do not have to limited to young people, though, and many adults work to keep their communities looking good. There may be opportunities to manage these efforts in some counties. Other positions include working in an elected official's office or managing elections. There positions are generally temporary, but they can be made into careers in larger counties.

Skills
The most important skill in county emplyment is passion. County officials want to see that candidates genuinely care about their local communities and are willing to go to the extra mile to make a difference. County emplyees should be honest and of high ethical standards, as they have the responsibility of caring for publicly funded matters. If you are unsure if county employment would be right for you, consider taking an aptitude test or career assessment.

Opportunities
Employment with your county can give you insight into the way your county runs and give you the chance to voice your opinion about the operations of your local area. By getting involved in town or county elections, you are helping your neighbors voice their opinion and take advantage of democratic rights. By maintaining your community's resources, you are making the most of the tax dollars being paid. In addition, these positions generally have regualr hours and paid vacation time or maternity leave.

Drawbacks
Because small areas are subject to changes in population and revenue, these positions can often times be insecure. People who work full-time for the county generally have good job stability, but those who work on a seasonal or part-time basis can often find that their job does not exist or has been absorbed by another worker. Make sure to ask questions about the nature of the position before accepting.
