Police officers are responsible for making sure people obey the law. They also punish those that do not. A police officer does not require an extensive education, but needs to be strong, healthy and honest. If you believe that you can become a police officer, you should consider taking a career assessment test. If your interests, social skills and personality fit that of a police officer, then you should consider a career in law enforcement. It can be very fulfilling and rewarding to know that you are keeping the streets safe from unsafe drivers, drugs and other crimes that may occur.

Future police officers should finish their high school diploma and pursue an associates or bachelors degree in criminal justice or related field. Candidates must be U.S. citizens and perform a drug test and lie detector test. They will also have background tests done to check their history. If they have been convicted of a crime or have a bad record, they may not be qualified to become a police officer.

Candidates must also have good vision and be familiar with the laws of the city and state they want to work in. They will be required to take the civil service exam at the police station they are applying to. Strength is a must when it comes to working in this dangerous field.

People thinking of becoming police officers can also go into the military for a few years and then transfer into a career in law enforcement. There are also police academies people can attend and train in to become professional and reliable police officers.

Police officers must be street smart and have the urge to help and protect their community and state. When they are full-fledged police officers, they will continue their education through workshops and lectures to stay up to date on the latest laws or rules that have been changed throughout the city or state. Responsibility and determination are good skills in good police officers.

There is room for job advancement. Police officers can become sheriffs, detectives, trainers and work in many areas of the law enforcement field. They receive a yearly income around $50,000, get paid overtime and have benefits. Of course, some do work weekends and nights. This job is one that can be obtained in a few years, requires confidence and team work to become the best police officer you can be.
