How to become an accountant

Were you the exam-acing front-row sitting, math genius from the time you heard the word arithmetic? If numbers, math, attention to detail, computer skills and a challenging work environment are what make your eyes glow, then a career in accounting might be the perfect place for you.

Every company needs employees to see to the financial side of the business, which  creates significant demand for accountants. Accountants are not nerdy math guys that endure a boring life day after day. Times have changed and the accounting field is changing, too. Though number crunching is still key, the career has become more attractive and popular than ever.

What are the first steps to pursuing a career as an accountant?

• You may start to prepare for a career as an accountant by taking courses in high school such as introduction to business, accounting, marketing and economics. These classes will help to develop some of the much needed skills for the field.
• Gaining experience through any type of work at an accounting firm or an internship would greatly boost your resume and heighten your chances of a job after your degree is received.
• Becoming familiar with accounting software would also help to get you noticed.
• Determine which field of accounting you would excel in, they include: public, government, and managing accounting and internal auditing.
• You must receive a Bachelor’s degree in either accounting or another business related field in order to be eligible for the CPA exam.
• Once your degree is obtained you can start studying for the CPA and apply for the exam. Lastly, take the four-part, two-day CPA exam.
