Electrical

Electricity is a basic essential need for life in the modern world. Without electricity, the world be dark due to little or no lighting and be difficult to survive in due to no climate control. The world would also be without most forms of long-distance transportation and communication. To keep the world running on electricity requires electrical workers, more specifically known as electricians.

Electricians not only install and maintain power lines, but they help to set up the entire electrical system starting with the power plants where electricity is generated and ending with the machines that use the electricity. Electricians keep electrical systems working properly and keep the deadly current safely insulated from human contact. They often work as independent contractors, but electricians can be employed in industries large and small.

Power companies employ a large number of electrical workers. They have a vast array of duties and specializations. Some electrical workers keep the generators operating at power plants. Others specialize in maintaining electrical relay stations. Another group of electricians installs and repairs power lines, which are either located high up on poles or underground. Yet another group maintains the lines leading to meters at homes and residences so the company knows how much electricity is being used.

Electricians are very important in the construction industry. They install electrical systems in all types of buildings. These systems include all of the wiring, breaker boxes and electrical outlets. Electricians must follow strict guidelines during the course of their work. These guidelines are for their own safety and the safety of people in the buildings. Not only is there a national electric code that must be followed, there are also state and local building codes.

Many electricians specialize in maintenance. Their primary job duties are inspecting electrical systems and electrical equipment. They may be called on to rewire an electrical system or replace it when it gets too old. They may also be called upon to repair electrical machinery whenever it malfunctions or stops working due to electrical problems.

Electrical workers have very strenuous and, sometimes, stressful jobs. The work requires standing for long periods of time and performing manual labor. They often work in dirty and confined environments, which may also be hot, cold, wet or subjected to any number of adverse conditions. Electrical systems are often outside of climate controls because they are outside of the areas normally occupied by people. Electrical workers also risk serious injury and even death due to electrocution.

If you like working with electronic or electrical machinery, or if electricity interests you, you can take an aptitude test or career assessment test to see if it is the right job for you.
