You may earn your degree through traditional classroom instruction, or you may take some courses at an online interior design school.

Interior designers work with clients, architects and contractors to create interiors in new buildings or to revamp old ones. There are many aspects to consider, such as code requirements, tastes, preferences and budget. They must also adhere to form, scale, color and arrangement in balance while taking into account construction, utility, economy and client satisfaction. Designers must also familiarize themselves with building materials such as woods, textiles and decorating products.

Designers are involved in planning the interiors of almost all building spaces and are expected to improve these spaces in order to enhance energy and space efficiency and increase aesthetic value. Designers generally focus upon décor. However, an increasing number of interior designers are expanding their duties and have become involved in designing architectural details, such as built-in bookshelves and crown molding, or planning the layout of buildings by helping to determine the location of stairways, windows, escalators and walkways.

Interior designers often work from blueprints and are required to create detailed floor plans. A great deal of your time will be spent searching for suitable aesthetic materials and meeting with clients and builders to discuss budget, design and construction details. Interior designers must often work under deadlines and budget constraints.
