Anyone who has dealt with an insurance claim has had to deal with an insurance adjuster. It may not seem like a complicated job at first. What seems simple at first may become very complicated, however, and an experienced adjuster will be the one best equipped to coordinate the many facets of settling a claim of a loss to an insurance company.
He or she may conduct interviews of the claimant, witnesses and family members, emergency and medical personnel, and may undertake inspections of the damaged property. All information gathered must be organized and correct, and interviews and inspections must be conducted in an objective manner. The career assessment of an effective adjuster will take into account attention to detail as well as good interpersonal skills. The ability to speak a foreign language fluently is also invaluable; language barriers can be some of the most difficult hurdles an adjuster will face.
The adjuster must be familiar with the terms of all policies involved in the claim. In some cases an adjuster will not be the best person to accurately determine the amounts of damages or the amount for which the insurance company is liable. He or she will contact experts in those areas requiring more detailed information, coordinate investigative efforts and collection of the information from such efforts.
The information gathered will be evaluated and arranged into a report that will be used to determine payment on the claim. Some writing ability is very beneficial, and the successful adjuster will present the material in as objective a manner as it was gathered.
When the claim has been approved, the adjuster's interpersonal skills are called upon again, as he or she may have to undertake negotiations with the claimant and/or medical facilities and repair companies, to settle the claim payment amounts and follow up to ensure that payments are processed in a timely manner.
If a claim is contested by the claimant or another party to the claim the adjuster will arrange for attorneys to defend the insurer. As during the investigation, the services of experts as witnesses may be retained and their efforts coordinated.
In the end, the policyholder has been treated fairly while the company has been protected against unreasonable claims. This process may involve many people and many details, all of whom are successfully managed by the adjuster.
