Medical assisting jobs are in high demand these days, especially with the new changes in the health care laws. A medical assistant is someone who oversees or participates in the clerical and administrative side of running a doctor's office, including filing patients' medical claims, keeping patient information up-to-date, scheduling appointments, arranging follow-ups, and sometimes performing data entry tasks for coding and billing. A medical assistant may also perform medical duties alongside a doctor or nurse, though this usually requires the sufficient knowledge and background to competently assist in this capacity. A medical assistant may be asked to record the patient's medical history, perform routine examination protocols, and call in the patient's prescription, among many other tasks. An aptitude test or career assessment can help a person to determine if this career is right for him or her.

Depending on the size of the facility and the particular needs of that facility, a hospital or doctor's office may hire one or several medical assistants to help consolidate the overall functions of the medical staff at that location. An especially gifted person may easily climb the ranks at a medical facility, with or without a Masters degree, due to the urgent need for more qualified personnel to meet the growing demand of patients and claims from insurance companies.
