Religion & Theology Careers

Obtaining a Theology Degree Will Enrich Your Life

Many people have a calling to become involved with their church or with religious studies in one way or another but don’t know where to begin. If you decide that this is a career path which you would enjoy or if you are thinking of changing careers, attending a divinity school or seminary school is a great choice!

Going back to college or attending university for the first time may seem like a daunting and costly endeavor. Depending on whether you choose a private university or a city college, you may be spending a small fortune on your education. Wherever you choose to attend, an education is never a waste of time or money and financial aid is readily available to most students, regardless of gender or age. Seeing an older crowd is common on most college campuses since many people want to change career paths.

If you would rather study from home, it is quite effective to get your theology degree online. There are many bible schools which offer online theology courses to accommodate their students who are working full-time jobs and raising families. An online theology degree is perfect for those who cannot leave their homes due to physical or time constraints.

People who choose to attend a school of divinity are usually motivated by helping others. The students who succeed are those who are selfless, kind, and eager to make a difference in their neighborhoods or in other parts of the world. They are keen learners, humanitarians, and often involved with community volunteer work. If this sounds like you, becoming a theology major may be your calling.

Theology courses are interesting and diverse. You will learn about many creative subjects which include:

History
Art
Psychology
Sociology
World Religions
Speech
Writing

Succeeding as a paid professional in the field of religious studies may be challenging at first but with experience and trust will come more permanent positions. If you are interested in working within the church, most will prefer you complete your master’s degree, at least. Usually professionals beginning with their master’s degree earn around $40,000 per year. If you desire to complete a doctorate, that is even more desirable. This shows your commitment and passion about learning.

There are many careers for those who hold a religion degree. Not all jobs are centered on a church. Some other possibilities include:

Running a not-for-profit agency in your community
Journalism and writing on religious topics
Teaching
International services (Peace Corps., etc.)
Counseling
Community leadership roles

All of these ideas require the finesse and compassion of someone trained in the field of religious studies. It is not necessary to focus on one particular religion, unless you are working in a specific church. You will acquire much more than specific knowledge about any one faith while attending seminary or theology school. You will learn about people, about compassion, and about being called for a purpose greater than yourself. This knowledge will inspire you in all areas of your life, both professionally and socially.
