Turning in your resignation can be a tricky situation. No matter how much you dislike your position, it’s important to be as tactful as possible when leaving your job. It would be unwise to burn any bridges because you may need references for future employment. Also, before actually resigning, you may want to consider several factors.
Do you really want to quit? Are you sure that you’ll like your new job? According to one corporate manager, an employee resigned and absolutely hated her new job but couldn’t return to her previous job because the position had already been filled. If you’re unsure about the position you are considering, you may want to shadow the staff to get a better idea of how your days will be spent.
Weigh your options carefully when considering a potential career change. Will your new position further your career? What sort of salary and benefits will you receive? Will you enjoy your new responsibilities? These are all important factors that will affect your overall happiness.
When you speak to your boss about resigning, remain positive and don’t share too much information. Explain that you’re leaving and talk about how the company has benefited you. It’s also tactful and professional to write a letter of resignation.
Before you leave, get a letter of recommendation from your manager. When applying for new positions, it’s always an advantage to have proof that you’re a capable individual.
