Employment opportunities in the funeral business include funeral directors and embalmers, most of whom have a thorough knowledge of human anatomy and, more specifically, mortuary science. Mortuary science degrees are not necessarily required for those employed in family-owned funeral homes, but they are recommended.

As a funeral director, you will be in charge of helping the families plan and arrange the funeral ceremony of their loved ones. This can include the selection of a casket for those who wish to be buried, an urn for those who wish to be cremated, a selection of flowers for the service, transportation for family and friends, and the decoration of viewing rooms for memorial services meant to commemorate the recently deceased. Funeral directors are often in charge of overseeing or performing the embalming and cremation processes, and it is not uncommon for them to attend funerals as well. The funeral director provides all the necessary functions for the series of funeral rites, playing an important role in helping families currently grieving or individuals who would like to plan ahead for their services.

While many funeral homes are family owned and operated, many institutions are opting to expand, which gives interested individuals more opportunities for employment. Requirements for employment vary between states, but an Associate's degree in mortuary science, a passing grade in the National Board Examination, and a one to two-year apprenticeship is usually sufficient. Potential funeral directors are encouraged to learn the process of cremation as traditional funerals and burial sites have become less popular, particularly among families on a budget.
