The job description of a school counselor typically involves helping students with making personal and academic decisions. Depending on the needs of the school district, some school counselors may also provide rehabilitation services for drug and alcohol abuse. In other cases, conflict resolution sessions are another part of a school counselor’s job.
Most school counselors work in private and public schools. Often called guidance counselors, many work closely with teachers, parents, school nurses and psychologists to provide the care and services that students need. The counselors might conduct individual or group sessions.
The grade level of students also factors into the duties of a school counselor. In junior and senior high, most school counselors work with students in choosing courses that determines a career path. The counselors may also help students in selecting a college or university to attend.
This includes the application process and financial aid information. The school counselor may advise students on volunteering or other extracurricular activities that can enhance a college application. The school counselor provides students with information about scholarships based on a chosen degree program. Students also receive college catalogs and training manuals from school counselors.
For students who plan to attend a technical college to learn a trade, the school counselor provides similar assistance. The students receive advice on the types of classes to take during high school to enhance their skills.
School counselors at elementary schools may have a different set of duties than those who work in a high school. Most counselors work with students who exhibit behavioral problems, disrupt classrooms or have a physical disability. Depending on the district, some school counselors may also work with students who get in trouble outside of school.
To become a school counselor, certification is required by all states. The standards are set by the state and may vary. A minimum bachelor’s degree is required in education, psychology or liberal arts. Continued educational studies in psychology, education, human growth and development and counseling are typically required to stay abreast of trends.
There are a number of ways anyone interested in becoming a school counselor can apply for the job. Professional associations, private employment agencies, job search engines, often have job openings listed. More frequently, a person can apply directly with the school district.
Advancement is available for school counselors. Some counselors choose to obtain a specialization such as vocational counseling. Moving up to a supervisor or school administrator is another career possibility as well.
