Eligibility
To be eligible to receive unemployment benefits, the worker must be unemployed through no fault of their own and must be able to work; be available for work; and be willing to seek and accept suitable work. The Unemployment Insurance Division requests information from both the claimant and the employer as to the reasons for the job separation. Those facts are then evaluated according to the requirements as stated in the Colorado Employment Security Act.
File a claim
In order to file an unemployment insurance benefit claim, you must:
- Be able, available, and willing to accept suitable work.
- Continue your job search.
- Maintain your job contact list.
- Call CUBLine on time.
- Report hours worked and any earnings.
The first week you are eligible for benefits is an unpaid waiting week. You must call CUBLine on time to receive credit for this waiting week.
The Unemployment Insurance program provides temporary and partial wage replacement to workers who have become unemployed through no fault of their own. The program is funded by employer paid taxes and provides benefits to those who meet the eligibility requirements of the Colorado Employment Security Act. The intent of the program is to aid in maintaining the economic stability within a community by safeguarding the income and purchasing power of the unemployed worker. The program is administered by the Division of Employment and Training of the Department of Labor and Employment.
In Colorado, unemployed workers file their claim for benefits by telephone. In the Denver-metro area, the number to call is (303) 318-9000. Nationwide, the number is 1-800-388-5515. An interactive voice system called CUBLine (the Colorado Unemployment Benefits Line) allows you to file for unemployment benefits with a simple phone call. CUBLine is convenient because it is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Phone calls are taken between 7:30 AM and 4:30 PM Mountain time, Monday through Friday, except on state observed Holidays.

To file for payment on an existing claim, to inquire about the status of a claim, or to obtain information about the Unemployment Insurance claims process call: (303) 813-2800 within the Denver metro area or toll-free at 1-888- 550-2800. These lines are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You must file for payment by 5:00 p.m. Mountain time, for same-day processing.

If you wish to file an appeal on your unemployment insurance benefit status, you should know that the appeals process is administrative in nature and the majority of appeals hearings are held without attorneys. However, it is strictly your decision as to whether or not an attorney is needed. The Division does not supply an attorney. The appeal process will not stop any benefits from coming as long as other program requirements are met. However, if benefits are awarded and an appeal changes the decision to a disqualification, then the benefits previously received must be repaid.
